Terms of Service

Last updated: November 17, 2025

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of PeerCards (the "Service"), a web-based platform designed for collaborative learning and AI-assisted educational activities. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

If you do not agree with these Terms, you must not use PeerCards.

1. Overview of the Service

PeerCards is an independent software project providing tools for:

  • collaborative learning;
  • generation and review of educational content;
  • AI-assisted explanation, analysis, and reflection;
  • assignment workflows involving teachers and students.

PeerCards is not an official service of any university unless explicitly stated. It may, however, be adopted by instructors or institutions at their discretion.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. Minors may use PeerCards only under the supervision of a teacher or institution.

By using PeerCards, you represent that:

  • the information you provide is accurate;
  • you have permission to register with the email address used;
  • you will comply with all applicable laws and institutional policies.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use PeerCards for any of the following:

  • submitting or uploading personal data about yourself or others (including names, health information, or identifying details);
  • uploading sensitive, unlawful, abusive, or copyrighted materials without permission;
  • attempting to disrupt, damage, or probe the platform's security;
  • impersonating others or misrepresenting your identity;
  • any use that violates your institution's academic integrity rules.

You are responsible for all activity carried out under your account.

4. User-Generated Content

You retain copyright over the content you submit. By submitting content to PeerCards, you grant the following license:

  • a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license for PeerCards to store, process, transmit, display, and modify your content solely for the purpose of providing the Service.

Teachers or institutions using PeerCards in a course may access and review user-generated content for legitimate academic purposes.

You must ensure that any content you submit:

  • does not contain personal data
  • does not violate copyright or third-party rights;
  • is appropriate for educational use.

5. AI-Assisted Features

PeerCards includes optional AI features. When using them, you agree:

  • not to include personal data in prompts, answers, comments, or uploaded materials;
  • to understand that AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading;
  • to use AI output responsibly, and never as a sole authoritative source.

AI outputs are provided on an "as-is" basis and must be critically evaluated. PeerCards is not responsible for errors or omissions in AI-generated responses.

6. Privacy and Data Protection

Your use of the Service is governed by the Privacy Policy, which forms an integral part of these Terms.

The Privacy Policy describes:

  • what data we collect;
  • how we process and store it;
  • how AI tools handle your inputs;
  • your rights under the GDPR.

By using PeerCards, you acknowledge that you have read and understood the Privacy Policy.

7. Availability of the Service

PeerCards is provided as a research and development project. Therefore:

  • the Service may be updated, modified, or temporarily unavailable at any time;
  • no uptime or continuity is guaranteed;
  • features may be added, removed, or changed without notice.

We are not liable for:

  • loss of data;
  • unavailability of the Service;
  • delays or interruptions.

Though we implement backups and security measures, you are encouraged to keep local copies of any important content.

8. Account Suspension and Termination

We may suspend or terminate accounts if users:

  • violate these Terms;
  • misuse the platform or interfere with others;
  • submit or upload prohibited content;
  • compromise platform security.

You may delete your account at any time by contacting support@peercards.org.

9. Intellectual Property

All software, logos, graphics, and platform elements are owned by the PeerCards project unless otherwise indicated.

You may not:

  • reproduce, distribute, or modify the platform code unless permitted by its open-source license (if applicable);
  • use PeerCards trademarks or branding without permission.

10. Third-Party Services

PeerCards interacts with the following third-party services:

  • OVH (France) for hosting the VPS (within the EU);
  • OpenAI for AI-assisted features.

Your use of AI features constitutes acceptance of the terms and privacy practices of these providers.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent allowed by law:

  • PeerCards is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind;
  • we are not responsible for errors, inaccuracies, or omissions, including those produced by AI systems;
  • we are not liable for damages arising from the use or inability to use the Service.

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability where prohibited by law.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms periodically to reflect improvements, new features, or legal requirements. Updates will be published on the website.

Continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
